EVERYONE'S DREAM HOME: 3450 square feet , 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, outside shower.
The original two story portion of this beautiful home was built in Teague in 1939 by locally renowned carpenter, Mr. Humphreys, for Mrs. Gus Harper. She was the sole owner of the house until about 1992 when it was sold by her heirs. We bought the house in the winter of 1994 when we remodeled the garage and washroom, refurbished the main house and restored its beautiful hardwood floors. It sits in the center of the 600 block of Cypress Street, one block from the city park, 2 blocks from Teague Elementary School, 2 or 3 blocks from the Baptist Church and the Methodist Church, and about 4 blocks from town. The soil is sandy loam, well drained. The home has a composition roof and is guttered. The lot is 100 feet wide and 140 feet deep and features three enormous oak trees, one in the front yard and two in the back. The front also has a pecan tree at the end of the drive way and a small tulip tree near the street. The side walk leads you the covered front porch and a door that welcomes you with an ornate Victorian screen door/storm door.
Inside, you will first notice the floors. They are number one grade solid white oak, installed when the house was built. The front room (on the left when you enter) was traditionally called the front hall, used for formally greeting and receiving company. We left one active gas jet in this room (and a heater in the stairwell closet). The dining room on the right features a built in serving hutch on the back wall, original to the house. We just added the feature light.
The floor plan of the original part of the house has not been changed and, you will find a wide arch separating the breakfast area (11'4"x5'9") from a generous kitchen (15'5"x11'4")with a huge old porcelain sink. Through those windows you will see a beautiful view of the back yard. There is a closet under the stairwell and an open pantry and a closed pantry on the other end of the room. There is room for a Hoosier cabinet, a bakers rack or a rolling island near the breakfast area. Through a small hall you will find the guest bath. This half of the lower floor has pine floors covered with linoleum. But the oak floors continue up the stairs to the landing and into both bedrooms.
The upstairs landing area has a very deep built linen closet and three doors. One door leads to a large bathroom with a huge built in storage unit (dirty clothes hamper built in on the bottom). One door leads to the blue bedroom (16'6"x15'5") and one to the pink bedroom (23'1"12'3"). These were wallpapered in 1995 with period Victorian paper and feature built in shelves and numerous windows. The pink room has two lighted walk in closets flanking a window seat overlooking the back yard with storage underneath. The blue room also has a lighted walk in closet and a nook at the back that opens to the pink bedroom.
Just past the guest bath downstairs is a hallway leading to the wash room and the family room: its inside wall lined floor to ceiling with narrow shelves, perfect for paperbacks, videos, CDs and DVDs. The wash room is a generous 14x18 feet that has built in open cabinets with Formica tops, a deep cast iron porcelain sink and a bank of drawers. There is ample room for a washer and dryer. There is a closet with a new 40 gallon gas hot water heater. There is also a drip/dry area for niceties that don't go in the dryer. On the back wall is a door (covered on the outside) that leads out onto the patio and on the outside of that back wall is a full shower complete with hot and cold water, well insulated, and very handy for the dirty gardener or even dirtier grandchildren. This washroom and the garage were added to the original 32x32 four-square sometime in the 1950's.
The garage was converted to a family room (24'x20') in 1995 and features two sets of working French doors and an entire wall of built ins. There is a built in cabinet for computing or home office, a built in for television and three sets of fully adjustable bookcases, two with cabinet doors below. There is a large closet and other built in cabinets across the back of the room. It features a bead board ceiling, and plush new carpet.
In 2003, we added a master suite (25'x19'4") behind the family room. It is lined on two walls with large windows to afford lots of light and a wonderful view of the patio and deck. This part of the house features 10 foot ceilings. There is a decorative shelf around two sides of the room near the ceiling. The floors are wood
laminate and there are his and hers closets; his with bi-fold doors (and an electrical outlet inside), hers a walk-in with built in shoe shelves and upper storage shelves. The main feature of this suite, however, are its two bathrooms, one for him, one for her. His is done in earth tone tiles with a shower and a window. Hers is larger with a continuous rim footed slipper tub, great for soaking and relaxing. The fixtures are located in the wall on the side of the tub and include a hand held shower. There are upper cabinets galore. These two bathrooms also have their own electric hot water heater.
The mother-in-law suite (20'x20') on the other side of the house (off the dining room) features its own electric hot water heater, wood laminate flooring and large, lighted walk-in closet with two walls of selves. The bathroom houses a 5 foot shower with a large bench seat at one end, with low accessible. soap dish and convertible hand held/or wall use shower head. The shower is made of tumbled marble and decorative border tile. This suite features windows to the front yard, a private back door with a covered porch, and a crystal chandelier. There is a swivel, wall mount television shelf that will also accommodate a VCR.
The home is zoned for climate control: there are 4 heating/cooling units. Those four zones (upstairs, downstairs, master suite, mother-in-law suite) feature gas heating and electric cooling (the best combo for the south) with individual thermostats for each.
The home was rewired and treated to new plumbing and a new sewer line in 1995. In 2003 we put in a linch water line to the house.
Attic access is available in three places: Upstairs in the pink bedroom, downstairs in the wash room, and in the mother-in-laws suite in the walk in closet. There is access under the two story part of the house just to the right of the front door. The original two story portion of the house is built on pier and beam foundation; the wash room, garage and both additions are on slab. The roof is composition. Gas cut off is under the step, off the left side of the back porch. There are four electrical outlets outside: two in the back and two in the front (one near the front porch and one at the base of the lamp light).
The backyard is completely enclosed by a cyclone fence which includes a large shaded dog pen. There is a covered back porch, just off the breakfast area with steps down to the patio and a wheel-chair ramp leading to the covered porch on the other end of the house. The patio is the entire length of the master suite and adjoins the deck which is an octagon measuring 8 feet in all directions around the old oak tree. There are three access steps to the deck (one toward the house, one toward the patio, and one toward the ramp) and the other five sides are protected by the railing. There is bench type seating around the trunk of the tree. The wood has been sealed just this summer on both the ramp and the deck. Our grandchildren loved the ramp. They called it the "bridge" and is their favorite place after the playhouse.
There are two out buildings at the rear of the yard. They were made by the Mennonite community of believers in Lott, TX, and are styled like small Victorian houses. The larger one (10 x 12 feet) we have used for storage, but the smaller one ( 8 x 8 feet) was always a playhouse. They are well constructed, fully floored, and have cinder block on sand foundations. The small doors in the front really function as do the windows, but each one features a full sized adult door on the end (and you can stand up inside), so that it is easily accessible when no longer needed for a play house. Both houses include porches.
